Not every book is for every reader, obviously you don’t have to love a book to have a thoughtful reaction to it, but when I see these negative reactions to Yesteryear because of “inconsistencies” or the author’s “errors,” I realize those readers have missed the entire idea of an unreliable narrator, and they’re about to miss the entire book.
It’s absolutely wild to me to see readers noticing something is off and deciding that’s a factual error made by the author. This means thinking the author wrote about homesteading without knowing anything about it, and also believing that the book was somehow published by a major publisher without any editing or fact-checking, rather than thinking hmmm, who else in this story doesn’t know about homesteading? Is there a character here who might not be entirely honest? Did the author put that line in on purpose? Perhaps the author is telling us something about the characters and the story?
If you’ve also finished the book, I have a spoiler-filled reaction to the ending of Yesteryear! But don’t click if you’re still in the middle of reading it!
