Rome Eterna is an interesting alternate history in which the Roman Empire never fell, written by scifi author Robert Silverberg. It’s perfectly good, but I read a lot of fiction set in Rome, so this isn’t my favorite ancient-Roman novel (the entire SPQR series is basically tied for first place) or my favorite alternate history novel. And this isn’t even my favorite Silverberg novel!

But, you guys, there’s a section where Silverberg writes a description in the style of Suetonius’ Lives of the Caesars and so Roma Eterna is worth reading just for that, realizing one of my favorite scifi authors studied classics and read exactly the same Roman history books as I did.
